I don’t recall attending “events” back in the day.

In the 90s and 2000s, instead of events we went to parties, the movies, and restaurants.

We also went to church and occasionally stayed longer for the Missionary Society’s Anniversary Program at 4:00 p.m. where we ate the standard menu – chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, sweet potatoes, homemade rolls, and somebody’s dry pound cake. O and let’s not forget the red punch in styrofoam cups. (Some of y’all know what I’m talking about! 😂)

The point is we didn’t lack a social life, at least I don’t think so. We attended our share of cookouts, fashion shows, and sometimes the Home and Garden Show or the Autorama.

Why does it seem now life wouldn’t be the same if there weren’t any events to attend?

Events must be the phenomena of the digital age and one of the side effects of social media. A plethora of events happen every day everywhere, including here in Cleveland. We seem to be addicted to them.

Don’t get me wrong. Events are cool. Some cooler than others like the one I attended this past Saturday, Brittney Moffatt’s Creative Photoshoot for Cleveland Bloggers.

Why this event and not any of the other 100 events in Cleveland posted on Facebook May 19?

“Who knows?”, I thought to myself.

Maybe it would help usher me back to the blogging sphere, especially because I haven’t been blogging regularly for GoneGirlGo?

It seemed like a good way for me to ease out of my hiatus, meet new bloggers, and possibly connect with bloggers I already know. I was also curious about the venue and wondered if I could add it to my list of cool places to check out in the city.

And you know what? I was right.

I chatted a bit about blogs and business with these lovely ladies.

(Vee, Brittney’s mom was the bonus connection. I loved the fact she hung out with her daughters and the bloggers. She told me she was so proud of Brittney and everything she’s doing. I especially loved that she promoted her jewelry business too. She let us pick something from her collection if we shared her business on our blogs. GoneGirlGo!!! 🌺

Besides making connections and talking shop with other bloggers, the space Brittney chose to host the event was a delight too.

I have a little thing about interior design and aesthetic that I satisfy in various ways (hmm..maybe I’ll share it on the blog one day.) Anyway, when I walked into Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals, I smiled inside because it was my kinda space.

And it provided the perfect backdrop for a blogger photoshoot with its selection of vintage furniture, china, glassware, tabletop accessories, and home decor.

Looking for a place to rent vintage fare for a wedding or other special occasion? An option for you to consider is at 2625 St. Clair Avenue, a skip east of downtown Cleveland.

I needed to network and stretch myself. I had to test out messaging for my new blog launching this summer. That  mini-photoshoot was right on time to rebuild my confidence and take some updated professional pics. And the experience of the space put a cherry on top of this event for me.

Despite the barrage of events happening in 2018 and beyond, events, the good ones, can do much more for us than we think.

Thanks Brittney.

As you know, I’ve started to blog about writing, a shift I’ve felt happening for a while now. One of the challenges I faced writing this particular post was figuring out an angle. I started the post in my journal to get my ideas out of my head. Once I transferred writing to my laptop, the “events” idea emerged. When I landed there, my writing eased a little. See, writing a blog post doesn’t have to be a wrestling match. And if it ever turns out to be one, wrestle your way through until you pin down the message. I can help you with that.

I explore ways to ease writing new program I’m launching this fall, Write at this Moment, an energizing, communal writing experience for aspiring bloggers and other writers who want support for their work. Visit the website to learn more about joining the Write at this Moment Fall Circle.
